I was at the store and overheard a woman tell somebody that a house in her neighborhood still had their Christmas lights and she felt it was tacky to keep them up this long.
The radio has stopped playing Christmas music.
No one has wished me a "Happy holidays", "Merry Christmas" or "Season's Greetings" in over a week.
How fast the spirit leaves us once the wrapping paper has been torn open.
I think I am going to send out Season's Greetings Cards now. I don't want the Tidings of Joy and Goodwill towards men to be a seasonal issue. Now that the expectation of gift giving is over, wouldn't the sentiments be more genuine now? I think so. If someone walked up to you and said, "Season's Greetings" and then started singing a Christmas Carol wouldn't that make you smile?
I realize that much of what I'm saying sounds like another attempt on my part to have December purged of lesser holiday fare to make Daniel Day more special, but it's not. Daniel Day is always special and long after I'm gone everyone will be celebrating it each in their own way.
I think I would like the music back the most. I love classic rock radio and it takes a lot for me to turn off 101 The Fox (exceptions being made for the times when they broadcast the Chiefs' games). Every year I look forward to the channel that suddenly just turns into a Christmas song channel over night. I like it. I especially like hearing Elvis' "Blue Christmas" and Tony the Tiger singing "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch." I'm baffled by many Christmas songs and many of the traditional ones are dull. "Silent Night" is my all-time favorite. No matter who sings it, it sounds wonderful.
If you want a Season's Greetings card from me, send me an address and I will put one in the mail for you. I hope you have a glorious January and that you still feel the Goodwill towards men.
Oh, lastly, I have no problem keeping my Christmas tree up all year and I think Christmas lights make every house look better. Why not keep them up? It's not tacky if you like it. It's only tacky if you don't mean it.
