Who do you follow? In whose footsteps do you tread? Today, a small boy was playing basketball with his father. The kid was maybe 9 or 10 years old and trying his best to keep up with his father. His father, seemingly a good person, did all he could to down play his abilities to let his son keep up. It was very charming and a sharp contrast to King Rogaine of the past week. The father would spin around, dribble between his legs, and lay up the ball with relative ease. Then his son, feeling the pride of genetics flow though his veins, spun around, stepped over the ball, and threw the ball up to the basket - swish. There was a lot of pride.

Meanwhile, in the weight room, a teenager who was barely a 100 pounds of flesh, and his father/coach who was built like he had eaten his two other children when they failed him, were working out as if there was a minimum weight limit they needed to make to be deemed worthy of acceptance and they were still two tons shy of that limit. You could see tears on that boys face. The willingness to meet the demand of his father's desires and not hitting the bar. The father also had tears but they came from the constant "encouraging" coming from his body language. There was also pride in this exchange, each son wanted to be their father, in their own way.

So whose steps do you step in? Who shaped you? I don't think our parents can always hand us a career, but perhaps they can shape the way we pursue them.
