Sprint tricked me. For the past four years I have had a special arrangement through a friend of mine which allows me a cheap phone plan with no contract. And for four years I have been a faithful servant. Well, I went in to update my phone under the impression that the same deal would apply with maybe a minor fluctuation in price. Instead, they verbally told me that the I had the same deal, they gave me a new smart phone (albeit an OLDER new phone) and then had me sign what looks like a small credit card machine screen. No fees and I should see the changes on my next bill.
The new bill arrived three weeks later and nothing that was agreed upon happened. Now I am paying twice what I was paying before. No big deal. They have messed up before and all I need to do is go in and talk to them. I went in, and according to the arrangement I have through my friend, I can only address account issues at one store - Sprint's busiest. I went in and they said, sorry. Ain't nothing changing. That's your bill. I said, well then, I'm leaving Sprint. That's not what we agreed upon.
Most corporations say this as a defense...
"Oh, that guy wasn't authorized to make that sort of deal with you. None of what he said is valid."
And here's the kicker - They say that I'm now locked in a long term contract and can't leave without heavy penalties.
So I called my friend to see what he could do. There is nothing he can do.
They tricked me and now I have no recourse.
Or do I?
I could walk away from the contract. I have no qualms about walking away from a contract that I didn't enter into knowingly or willingly. The problem I am facing is that I don't want my friend who works for Sprint, to bear my burden. I'm sure Sprint won't have any problem sticking it to my friend.
So I ask you, dear reader, what should I do? I need some feedback and soon as the deadline to leave draws near.
Option 1: Leave Sprint and perhaps stick it to my friend for what could be hundreds of dollars. This would mean finding a new phone, contacting everyone with the new number, etc. I think I would go with a pay as you go phone. I'm not a big phone user and now that I'm off Facebook, I don't really use the smart phone very much.
Option 2: Stay with Sprint. Pay for an overpriced phone I don't use, and protect my friend. This would mean compromising my principles.
Option 3: Go beat the shit out the manager of the Sprint store. This has very little negative feedback. A few months or years in the pokey with a lifetime of smiles every time I think of that guy eating all of his meals through a tube in his throat, and having to empty a colostomy bag...
Guess which option I'm leaning toward...
